Analysis below was performed on a McIDAS workstation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, utilizing a Barnes analysis scheme. Displays of flight tracks were taken from the Multispectral Atmospheric Mapping Sensor (MAMS) (Jedlovec, 1987) aboard the same NASA/ER2 aircraft as the HIS. Boxes represent the HIS footprint for the individual retrievals. Cloud contamination checks were performed (using the process of spatial coherence (Coakley and Bretherton, 1982)) to identify those HIS footprints with high amounts of cloud contamination, and were removed from the analysis of the front. See Olander, 1993 for further details.
